                                                           A little about the connection of Vaughan & Vowles

 

 

 

 

Henry Richard Vowles (Blind Harry)  1861 - 1919

My Grandfather born in London, went blind at three weeks old. He spent most of his early life in a home for the blind, where he learnt to sing and play a number of instruments. Then moved to Brighton in 1882 met and married Alice Vaughan and had 9 children. Made his living from singing in the Music Halls, Hotels, Large Houses and on the promenade on Sunday afternoons. He had a excellent tenor voice. 

 

 

 

   

 

 

Alice Vaughan   1873 - 1958

My Grandmother was born in Chilham, Kent. She move to Brighton and stayed with her sister Matilda Vaughan who had married Charles Prior. Alice found work in the home of the Hannington's the department store owner. Where she met Blind Harry who was a regular there entertaining with his tenor voice, singing all the latest show songs.

 

 

 

 

Elise Vowles   1916 - 1992

My mother who gave up her job in Epsom Hospital and moved down to Worthing, to look after me when my birth mother Kathleen Vowles died in childbirth with me in 1946. Not only did she look after a new born baby she had to look after her mother Alice Vowles (nee Vaughan) I could of not asked for a better mother.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Kathleen Annie Vowles  1906 - 1946

My birth mother was born in Brighton and trained as a hairdresser and moved to Worthing where her brothers Frank Vowles and Arthur Vowles lived. During the war she worked in a grocers shop and with her brother Arthur would sing in the hotel's and pubs around Worthing entertaining the troops. She fell for a Canadian, who went back to Canada before I was born in 1946

 

 


 

 

 

 

Christopher R Vowles   1946 -

This is a picture on me together with my mother Elsie Vowles, taken at "Butlins" in Margate about 1958. In 1961 I joined the merchant navy and Elise found love when she met Albert Cowell, while staying with Edith Foreman in Boughton, Kent. Elsie died in 1992 and Albert died in 2000. I have three daughters and nine grandchildren
